Abbotsford is a Canadian city located in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia. It is the fifth widest community in British Columbia, home to 115,463 citizens in 2001. The population for the Census Metropolitan Area was 147,370 (2001). Abottsford is situated in the Fraser Valley, where 253,844 people (2001) live. It is located immediately north of the Canada-US border, across from Sumas, Washington. Mount Baker, a large glacier-clad volcano just across the border, can be seen from most parts of the city.
The village was incorporated in 1892 and was named for a Maclure family friend, Harry Abbott, Western Superintendent of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Then, in 1995, the city was incorporated, through the amalgamation of the District of Abbotsford with the District of Matsqui. Abbotsford is 359.18 square kilometres in size, with a population density of 321.5 residents per square kilometre.
