With the rise in pharmacy robberies, Oxycontin has become an extremely popular Heroin substitute as well as its use in conjunction with MDMA.

Massachusetts Cocaine rehab :Cocaine is readily available form the gram to kilogram quantities throughout the state. New York is the primary source area, with other source areas to include Florida and the Southwest Border. Cocaine is transported in multi-kilogram quantities via commercial transit, tractor trailers and vehicles equipped with hidden compartments. It is also imported via mail services. Importers are of Colombian and Dominican origin, with retail distribution among all ethnic groups. Cocaine prices continue to be stable, with slight decreases in purity levels noted. Crack Cocaine is obtained from New York, Florida, Puerto Rico and is converted locally as well. African -American violators and street gang members continue to dominate the Drugs’ distribution. Abuse remains widespread and Crack continues to be reported as the Drug of choice within Boston city limits.

Personal use quantities of hashish continue to arrive in Boston, MA on flights from the Netherlands and other source countries. The majority of the Marijuana is predominantly imported from the southwest border via aircraft, land vehicles, and delivery services. As of May 2005, there were 7 drug courts in Massachusetts that had been in existence

committed drug crimes. More than  29% of these offenses involved crack cocaine.

Corrections

 On March 28, 2005, the Massachusetts Department of Corrections (DOC) population
was 9,886. In 2004, the average daily DOC population was 9,949.

 There were 12,506 inmates in Massachusetts County Correctional Facilities on
March 28, 2005. The average regular county facility population in 2004 was 12,588.

 On January 1, 2004, narcotic offenders constituted 21% of the Massachusetts DOC
population.

Correctional Recovery Academy (CRA)

The Massachusetts DOC contracts with Spectrum Health Systems, Inc., of Worcester,
to offer residential programs targeting drug abuse, anger management,
criminal thinking, and relapse prevention. There are seven CRA units throughout the
DOC. An important component of the CRA is narcotic abuse monitoring. All
participating prisoners are drug tested upon entry into the six-month residential
component and on a monthly basis thereafter.

 On June 30, 2002 the Massachusetts adult probation population was 131,319 and
dropped to 127,135 on June 30, 2003. The Massachusetts adult parole population
diminished in 2003, from 3,951 on January 1 to 3,704 on December 31.

 About 16% of the DOC substance offenses on January 1, 2004 involved
trafficking 28-100 grams of a Class B substance.

Consequences of Use

The amount of drug overdose fatalities in Massachusetts increased 22% during 2001.

 In FY 2004, there were 102,226 adult admissions to treatment services in
the state.  Almost 39% of the adult admissions to treatment in FY 2004 reported
heroin as the principal drug of abuse. Over half (55.9%) of the adolescent
treatment admission in FY 2004 reported cannabis as the primary drug of abuse.

Most of the population of the Boston metropolitan area (approximately 5,800,000) does not live in the city; eastern Massachusetts on the whole is fairly densely populated and largely suburban. Western Massachusetts is more rural and sparsely populated, especially in the Berkshires, the branch of the Appalachian Mountains which forms the western border of the state. The most populated part of western Massachusetts is the "Pioneer Valley," alongside the Connecticut River, which flows across Western Massachusetts from north to south.

 As of October 31, 2004, there were 19,439 full-time law enforcement authorities in
the state (16,274 officers and 3,165 civilians).

Trafficking and Seizures

 Massachusetts is a distribution center for illegal narcotics destined for northern New
England.

 Colombian and Dominican substance traffickers control the distribution of cocaine and
heroin throughout the state.

Most of the MDMA available in the state comes from sources in Western
Europe and New York. There have been a limited amount of seizures involving
MDMA that comes from Canada.

OxyContin is often imported into the state from Mexico.

 During 2004, Federal authorities seized 84.7 kilograms of cannabis  in Massachusetts.

In 2003, there were 1,937 cultivated cannabis plants eradicated and seized in
Massachusetts under the DEA’s Domestic Cannabis Eradication/Suppression
Program.

From 2000 to 2004, the DEA and State and local authorities seized
3 methamphetamine labs: 1 lab in each of the following years 2001, 2003 and 2004.
